How are we doing so far? Remember the Old Largs team are always looking for locals to proof read our Largs guides and tell us if we have got any facts wrong or have missed out anything. We want to make these guides as accurate as possible so please get in touch via oldlargs@hotmail.com if you would like to contribute in any way.
Ahhh Gino's Fryer. Great wee chippy. Has just recently changed hands and back under the control of the family who first opened the fryer in 1982. We don’t actually know much about the history of this location but believe was the location of William Less tailors in the 1900's and later a butchers.
Check out Gino's Facebook page here
Next door we have the Jande Vries Health Shop. In the 1850s Donald Denny tobacconist, later Birrells sweet shop and Liptons. More recently the Health and Diet Center.
We now arrive at the Salvation Army Charity Shop. In the past on this site was The Scotch Wool Shop which which later became Mackay's who when on to become M&Co. Mackays ran from the Tron between 1985 until 1993 when it moved to its current location on the Main Street. Also housed Galls shop and Bellmans Shop which was part of the Coats Paton group. Also for a while Carr's Shoe shop, Nugent Ladies & Gents Hairdressers, Oxfam ,Savers and now the Salvation Army Charity Shop.
The location of the Old Santendar Bank in the 1960s housed Jimmy Harris the Chemists and then Hector Thomson Chemists which closed in 1975. In 1977 the building was purchased by the Provincial Building Society and in 1991 it was purchased by the National & Provincial Building Society. They spent nearly 12 months modernising the premises. The Provincial became the National and Provincial then the Burnley Bank. Later it became the Abby National Bank and eventually the Santendar Bank.
The two top right hand images are of Wee Willie who took pride of place in the Andersons Bakery Shop which was located where Modele is now. Wee Willie helped the Anderson's to win second place in the best dressed shop window competition when the Mod came to Largs in 2002. He remained in place until the shop eventually closed after 10 years trading in 2004.
In case anyone is worried what eventually happened to Wee Willie the Anderson family have confirmed to us that Wee Willie is currently enjoying his retirement up in the Anderson family loft. Later the shop was then leased to Lynne's Wool shop and then to a number of other short term leases.
Now let’s move over to the other side of the Tron.
